Consider a Car, how does it goes forward? Easy right? You Press the accelerator and the car goes swinging all its way, and how does it stops? When you Release the accelerator and press the brake pedals.
Now, lets take an example of an Aircraft, there is a throttle available that gives the requires push to the aircraft, known as the thrust. And the opposite to it is called reverse thrust.
When the throttles are pushed to the maximum, the aircraft speed plunges to its maximum limit and the aircraft flies in the air. While returning back to the land the aircraft uses some of its tools like flaps and spoilers and also uses a different method called the reverse thrust which cuts the air entering the engine and helps to slow down the aircraft.
