What is NASA's Voyager Program?

The program launched way back in 1977 was aimed to travel to the planets and collect different information.

If I had to ask you a Question that: "How far the Visions of Humans take us"? How far do you think we could go?

Keep Thinking....

Voyager Program is one of the Nasa's ambitious project to find out more about the different planets that surround our Solar System. It was the Year 1977 when two spacecrafts namely Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 were launched from earth whose main mission was to capture and transmit data from different planets that exist in our Solar System.

Now, you might wonder what those planets were? They were Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune the last lists of planets in our solar system.

Sounds simple right?

Well the next part is even more interesting to know

The Voyager 1 Space Craft completed its mission by 1980 and the Voyager 2 in 1989, but NASA had some other plans for these 2 Spacecrafts, so they continued the mission of Voyagers programs.

These Space Crafts are now Billions of Kilometers away from Earth and are still functional. Although the instruments on board are not that advanced as compared to what we have now, still the data is being transmitted from this spacecrafts back to earth.

To give an Idea how far are the two spacecrafts, look at the diagram below

As per NASA both the spacecrafts have reached the Interstellar Space. Simply put the Spacecrafts have reached the boundary of Sun.

Now, there might be Questions about Communications and Electricity in these Spacecrafts.

So lets understand that first: -

  1. Communications: - NASA has something called Deep Space Network which is basically a network of satellites present in United States, Mexico and Australia that help in communicating with different satellites and space programs.

  2. Electricity: - The electricity in the spacecrafts are provided with the help of Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator which basically a type of nuclear battery that generates electricity when radioactive material decay in non radioactive material. The fuel used in this case is Plutonium.

The electricity is obviously getting reduced as there is a lack of fuel, so In order to cope up with this issue, few of the instruments are turned off.

The communications from these spacecrafts are expected to last till some more years, till then we would be discovering new about our Galaxy.

At last to answer the Question, "How far the Visions of Humans take us"?

It would be Infinity.
